A Three-Step Method for Handling Conflict Without Escalation
When a conversation turns tense, our instinct is to react quickly. Too quickly.
And that’s often what makes things worse.
Here’s a simple method to keep things from spiraling:
1. Pause
-Take a breath before responding. In fact, your first response to a tense situation or conflict should ALWAYS be to take one calming breath. A few seconds of silence are better than words you’ll regret.
2. Perspective
- Ask a question instead of making a statement. “What concerns you most in this situation?” opens the dialogue instead of shutting it down.
3. Proposal
- Don’t try to "win"—try to move forward. Instead of saying, "You don’t get it," try, "What if we test this for a week and then adjust?"
Handling conflict isn’t about overpowering the other person. It’s about staying clear-headed when emotions are running high.
Who could apply this today?
