It’s not what you say that erodes your authority. It’s what your silences reveal.
In coaching, I often see this paradox:
👉 Leaders who talk too much to hide insecurity.
👉 Others who stay silent—but for the wrong reasons.
🎯 There are 3 main types of silence—and each sends a strong signal:
Nervous silence: driven by fear of judgment. It signals disorientation.
Strategic silence: used to observe, contain or influence. It builds respect.
Avoidant silence: used to dodge conflict. It erodes trust.
👀 Your body always reveals the intention:
Clenched hands = discomfort
Slight backward lean = withdrawal
Averted gaze = avoidance
✅ What great leaders do:
They stay silent without disconnecting.
They hold presence, even in uncertainty.
They turn silence into a space for clarity and influence.
🧭 Silence isn’t emptiness. It’s a message. And sometimes, it’s your most powerful leadership tool.
